The Service Ontario appraisal
A used car is taxed on its book value, not on what it's actually worth. The appraisal sets the real value.

Where to find the book value: it's the wholesale value printed in the Used Vehicle Information Package (UVIP), which the seller buys from ServiceOntario and has to give you.

Ontario charges 13% on the greater of the price paid and the book value; with an appraisal, on the greater of the price paid and the appraised value. A car over twenty years old has no book value, so it needs an appraisal regardless. Illustration, not tax advice.

Anything quoted — call 416-880-3557, or bring it in.

An official, up-to-date valuation of a vehicle as it is now — its mechanical condition, body, interior and kilometres, and its history: accidents, rental or commercial use, and whether it was registered out of province or country.
At Service Ontario you pay HST on the book value listed in the Used Vehicle Information Package (UVIP) the seller gives you. High kilometres, wear, damage, or a history of accidents, rental or out-of-province use can make the car worth less than that — the appraisal sets its real value, and you pay tax on that instead. A vehicle over 20 years old needs an appraisal letter anyway, because it has no book value listed.
Paying HST on the real value at Service Ontario, import and export, legal matters such as divorce, bankruptcy and estates, insurance claims and coverage, protecting the value of a classic, and bank loans. Cars, vans, trucks, motorcycles and more.
